Since the sixteenth century the Estremoz´s muds gained significant prestige beyond borders. Such fame and prestige was mostly developed around a small piece of pottery, pucarinho, a water drinking vessel greatly appreciated by the ladies of the European courts by providing freshness and flavor.

As testimony to this we have the painting ”Las Meninas” by Velazquez, in which he represents the daughter of Felipe IV, Princess Margarita, receiving a golden cup in a small ceramic pitcher, an Estremoz´s manufacturing. In Estremoz, where pottery has its own characteristics and is very easy to meld, the eighteenth-century ceramic artisans were giving shape to unique and internationally known, the famous ”Estremoz´s Bonecos”, similar to the ”Presépios de Altar” dolls representatives of the costumes and typical tools of the people of Alentejo. These ceramic figures it´s worth to be mentioned the famous ”Fidalghuinhos”, the ”Napoleões”, the ”Amor é Cego”, the ”Primavera” and the ”Pretos”, among others.Other pieces that are also quite curious are the ”Assobios”, the ”Rouxinóis” and also the Knitting hooks for make laces or socks.
